blurring the Awards scene

This week we’ve opened nominations for the ‘blurries‘ – an online recognition of companies that are excelling in their field and disrupting the world into the process.

The business world has no shortage of awards: from showcases of great advertising to a plethora of start-up contests. From the early days of Red Herring through to more recent ones associated with events like Mobile World Congress, it’s not too hard to have the opportunity to show case your business and badge your website.

There’s been some negativity associated with these: start-up competitions that have winners who’ve been winners of start-up competitions for several years; competitions where you’re effectively paying to win and most recently some stir as TechCrunch revealed the winner of the Telegraph Startup 100 had been switched at the last moment.

So why are we joining in with the awards frenzy? Because, as always with things blur, we’re challenging the norm. We want companies that are truly disruptive. Companies who’ve developed a technology that’s never been deployed in the marketplace and will significantly alter the way we live and work. Those early Cloud businesses right through to things like Spotify. Companies who’ve taken something normal and delivered it so differently that we can’t remember how it used to be. Step forward Groupon. Or just someone who’s shaken up by effective marketing – we have to love those Paddy Power stunts.

We had some fun earlier this year with our list of disruptive companies but a lot of people wanted us to be serious on the subject – because this definitive list of disruptive businesses hasn’t appeared from the usual sources. Perhaps because they’re not  that comfortable with disruption. And if you can deal with that paradox you’re perfect for nomination. So get over to our Facebook pages and nominate. At the end of June we’ll be putting these nominations up to the public vote – calling on our network of over 10,000+ professionals on the Creative Services Exchange and our social network exceeding 40,000.  As well as anyone who wants to have a say in creating this definitive list.
